CrowdScope Français

Crowd counting · iPhone

Between the two numbers, there's a measurement.

CrowdScope estimates how many people are at a gathering in seconds, using your iPhone camera. An honest range, its margin of error, and a PDF report that documents how it was measured.

CrowdScope screen: range 640 – 830 people over a dense crowd

Organizers, police… and a third source

At a rally or a gathering, the figures given by organizers and by the police can differ by a factor of two or more. Each side has its own method and its own vantage point. CrowdScope doesn't replace either: it adds an independent estimate, measured on the spot and documented.

Three ways to count

From a small, scattered gathering to a packed square, and soon a march that goes on for hours.

Live

A crowd in front of you

Point and get an instant range with its margin and a density map. The app picks the right model by itself, for sparse or dense crowds.

  • Live density map over the image.
  • Margin shown: ±12% above 500 people, ±14% from 300 to 500, ±17% below.
  • LiDAR filter on iPhones that have it: rejects false crowds up close.

Sweep

A crowd wider than the lens

Turn on the spot to cover the whole crowd: each area is counted only once.

  • ARKit tracks where you point: areas already seen are not counted again.
  • PDF report with the swept sector on a map.
  • Margin shown slightly wider than in Live mode (5 points more).

Procession

A march that lasts for hours

With your iPhone fixed on a tripod or a balcony, the app counts the people who cross a line drawn across the march, in both directions, for hours.

  • Setup assistant: tilt, steadiness, head size, light.
  • Nothing is counted while the iPhone moves or the image is cut; those periods are logged.
  • The count is saved every minute.
  • PDF report: time span, crossings per direction, peak flow, usable time.
  • Stated margin ±20%, measured on reference videos (HT21).

How it works

Point at the crowd

A live range appears on screen, with a density heat map.

Sweep if it's wider

Turn on the spot: each area is counted only once.

Capture and share

What CrowdScope does

A range, not a guess

For example 560 – 720 people, with the expected margin. Never a made-up exact figure.

Documented PDF report

Date, time and time zone, GPS position, viewing direction on a map, images, reliability notes, reading number.

Anonymized by default

In the report, heads are pixelated and close faces blurred. You can turn it off.

100% on your iPhone

The AI runs on the Neural Engine, even offline. No image uploaded, no account.

Reading history

Every reading stays on your iPhone: edit your notes, regenerate the PDF anytime.

LiDAR filter

On iPhones with LiDAR, rejects false crowds up close (rugs, patterns).

Who it's for

Journalists

A sourced figure with place, time and method that your editor can check. Send the PDF in one tap.

Police and security teams

A quick attendance estimate, logged with position and direction, ready to attach to a report.

Organizers and venues

Track attendance at an event, a square or a fan zone, reading after reading.

Measured accuracy, not a promise

≈ 12%

average error in Live mode, on dense crowds

  • Measured on ShanghaiTech Part A, the reference academic benchmark: 182 test images, crowds of 500 people and more.
  • Margin shown in the app: ±12% above 500 people, ±14% from 300 to 500, ±17% below, widened when the reading is unstable.
  • DM-Count model (NeurIPS 2020), adapted to the iPhone's Neural Engine.
  • Procession mode (version 1.1): stated margin ±20%, measured on reference videos (HT21), wider than in Live mode.
  • It is an estimate: only people visible to the camera are counted; distance, light and obstacles matter.

Private by design

  • No image ever leaves your iPhone.
  • No account, no ads, no tracking.
  • Only the location is sent to Apple Maps, to draw the report's map and address.

FAQ

Is it an exact number?

No, by design: CrowdScope gives a range with its measured margin of error. The report states the method, how stable the reading was, and its limits.

Are my images sent anywhere?

No. Counting, images and the report are all produced on the iPhone. You decide who gets the PDF.

Do I need an iPhone Pro?

No. The LiDAR filter (which rejects false crowds up close) only exists on iPhones with LiDAR; everything else works on any iPhone with iOS 18 or later.

What's in the PDF report?

The range and central estimate, date, time and time zone, GPS position, viewing direction (or swept sector) on a map, anonymized images, reliability notes and a reading number.

Can it count a moving march?

Coming soon: Procession mode arrives in version 1.1 (CrowdScope Pro). Today, CrowdScope counts the crowd visible at a given moment, in Live or Sweep mode. With Procession mode, your iPhone, on a tripod or a balcony, counts the people who cross a line, in both directions, for as long as the march lasts. Stated margin ±20%, measured on reference videos (HT21).

How do I cancel?
